Inspection in Austria

• 09/23/2025

This past weekend, there was another inspection in beautiful Austria. Inspector Geertje van de Veen and aspiring judge and chairman Gorrit Kuipers were present to assess the horses. Martin Posseger, the chairman of BPS Austria, was in charge of the organization, and everything went smoothly. After a week of rain, the weather during the inspection was wonderfully beautiful, and the quality of the horses was also high.

Five horses participated in the IBOP test. For one participant, the IBOP came a bit too early, and they were asked to try again next time. The other four combinations successfully completed the test, with the top scorer being the mare J. Ramona von der Nockalm (Ceasar ter Linden XX05 x Reinder 452) owned by B & A Hellwing – Uhlenbruck. This very well-presented six-year-old mare moved with great rhythm, balance, and technique, earning 72 points.

Her younger sister, Katharina von der Nockalm, also successfully passed the IBOP with 67.5 points and was immediately declared Elite during the inspection by earning 47.5 points, as her appearance also left little to be desired. It was not entirely unexpected that she also claimed the Day Championship. In the photo below with Gorrit Kuipers, Geertje van de Veen, and owners the Kostwein-Hanzl family.

The stallion Lennard BP100 (Allard BP21 x Jerke 434) also scored well enough under saddle to pass his IBOP. The stallion showed a lot of suppleness, a very workable canter, an energetic walk, and with this result, completed his mandatory aptitude test.

Reserve Day Champion went to the impressive colt Phelias vom Hirschberg (Tiede 501 x Dagho BP32). This strong and noble foal showed an outstanding canter with great ability collect and lengthen strides, earning 44 points and a first premium. In the photo, on the right next to the horse is Martin Posseger, chairman of Barock Pinto Austria, with his partner Jan Peter Kohmaier and Geertje van de Veen.

There was also a prize for Best of FB and Best of XX, which went to mother and son – something that doesn’t happen often! Skalli (Sir Ludwig x Feitse 293) is a very feminine horse with a beautiful forehand and a striking head. She could perhaps have been a bit more impressive in movement, but still earned a first premium with 42.5 points. Her well-developed son Pearl Thomas van de Zeiser (Waterman TZ) was named Best of XX with a respectable second premium.

The sixteen-year-old stallion Waterman TZ (Wizard x Ricordo di Leny) had already earned the Ster predicate in his younger years and will now be officially registered as Waterman Ster XX26 after this inspection, where he also successfully passed the IBOP. This stallion can make a positive contribution to breeding due to his unique bloodline, which complements almost all Friesian mares. In the photo with owner F. Zeiser and both jury members.

One very unique and touching moment involved the foal Poison SDB (Kornelius Ster BP840 x Abe 346). This colt was not presented next to his mother, but next to his father! Poison’s mother died when he was just seven weeks old. His owner, D. Belosevic, placed the foal with the stallion, and it went so well that they now share a pasture together! Very special – and proof that it can work this way too.

All in all, it was a wonderful weekend in the mountains, with a great atmosphere, lovely people, and equally lovely animals.
